Introducing a NEW elective course at Fraser Heights Secondary …
Project Design and Development for grades 9-12
This year my Hum 8 and English 10 classes have been exploring their “passions“ through self-directed projects during our “Genius Hour.” It was inspired by Google’s 20% paid time offered to employees to work on anything of their choosing (problem solving, creating new products,…). Some of the companies greatest innovations and products have risen from this “free time” to explore their “passions” including gmail. (This recent Genius Hour News article Jan 2013 discusses this further.)These classes have been some of the most engaging and popular in both my courses – for both the students and myself. I find myself learning alongside the students more everyday and being inspired by their queries, enthusiasm, focus, and drive to learn and share their interests. I am in awe of their creativity and honoured to share their enthusiasm with you.
Here is what students have to say about Genius Hour:
This year`s Genius Hour would not have been successful without the help of my Humanities 8 and English 10 classes. They not only exceeded my expectations as we ventured into new territory together, but it was their trust, interest, enthusiasm and assistance that helped me take a chance on proposing it as a new course. Thanks especially to Marilyn Sun (En 10) for creating the 2 minute promo video linked above.
I also want to thank our FH Innovative Learning Design Team, our admin. team, the Surrey School District 36 for installing wifi in all our schools, and my new-found Twitter PLN (Personal Learning Network) for sharing their passion for learning and teaching everyday. I`ve always loved teaching but now I am excited about learning and exploring together with the kids. It is an exciting time to be teaching !
